Boarding school admissions is not college admissions in miniature

Families often assume the two processes rhyme. They do not. A thirteen or fourteen-year-old has a thin record by definition, so the file carries far less weight and the interview carries far more. At several of these schools the interview is the application.

The other difference is the parent. Boarding schools interview families, not just students, and they are deciding whether they want eight years of a relationship with that household. Parents who treat their own interview as a formality do real damage.

The timeline

Applications close around 15 January and decisions land on 10 March. Working backwards: SSAT or ISEE testing should be done by December with time for a retake, interviews run from September through January and the best slots go early, and the school list should be settled the preceding spring.

That means the useful work starts in sixth or seventh grade. Families who begin in the autumn of the application year are compressing eighteen months into four.

SSAT, interviews and the rest of it

  • SSAT and ISEE strategy, including which test suits the student and when to sit it.
  • Interview preparation for both student and parents, including revisit days.
  • School list built around fit and entry year, not reputation order.
  • Application essays and the candidate statement, in the student’s own voice rather than a polished adult one.
  • Teacher recommendations, including who to ask and how far ahead.
  • Financial aid timing, which at most of these schools runs on its own earlier calendar.

Entry year matters more than families expect

Ninth grade is the largest intake at nearly every school on this list. Tenth is materially harder because the places are fewer. Repeating a year, which is common and carries no stigma in this world, can turn a marginal candidate into a strong one and is worth considering seriously rather than dismissing.

School by school

What each one actually reads for.

Phillips Academy Andover

Phillips is the largest of the ten and the most academically open-ended. Andover reads for independence: a student who needs structure to perform is a weaker fit than one who will use the freedom.

Phillips Exeter Academy

Phillips is built entirely around Harkness, where every class is a seated discussion. The interview is effectively an audition for that table, and quiet competence reads less well here than it does elsewhere.

St. Paul's School

St. is fully residential, with no day students at all. Admissions reads hard for whether a fourteen-year-old will thrive living away from home for four years, and families underestimate how central that question is.

Groton School

Groton is small, with roughly 380 students, and admissions is correspondingly personal. A Groton file is read by people who will know the student by name within a term, which rewards specificity over polish.

Deerfield Academy

Deerfield is strong across athletics and academics, with a close community culture. Fit questions in the interview are real questions, not formalities.

The Hotchkiss School

The Hotchkiss School is academically demanding with unusually deep arts and environmental programmes. A student with a genuine specialism has more to work with here than a generalist.

The Taft School

The Taft School is a 'non sibi' service culture that runs through the whole school. Applicants whose record shows sustained commitment to something outside themselves land better than those with a longer list.

Choate Rosemary Hall

Choate is known for its signature programmes in writing, science research and international study. Naming the specific programme a student wants, and why, is the single most useful thing an applicant can do.

The Lawrenceville School

The Lawrenceville School is organised around the House system, which shapes nearly everything socially and academically. Interviews probe how a student will contribute to a House, not only a classroom.

Milton Academy

Milton is both boarding and day, just outside Boston, with a reputation for independent thinking and a strong arts tradition.

And afterwards

A place at one of these schools is the start of the work rather than the end of it. Students who arrive with a plan — something of their own to build, research to pursue — use four years considerably better than students who arrive and wait. That planning starts in ninth and tenth grade.

Pricing sits in two tiers, each quoted after a private consultation.
