The Bay Area problem

Bay Area applicants are among the strongest in the country and that is precisely the difficulty. A committee reading a stack from Palo Alto, Cupertino or San Francisco sees the same profile repeatedly: near-perfect grades, a heavy load of AP or IB courses, competitive mathematics or robotics, a summer programme, a coding project.

The pattern repeats across the region's strongest schools. Lowell, Gunn, Saratoga and Mission San Jose on the public side; Harker, Menlo, Castilleja, Nueva, Lick-Wilmerding and Bellarmine on the private. Committees read these schools closely and know exactly how hard the courses are, which is useful for establishing rigour and useless for standing out.

None of it is a weakness. It simply does not separate one file from another. Students here are not competing against the national pool so much as against their own classmates, and the margin is decided by whether an officer can describe the applicant in one sentence that nobody else in the region could claim.

UC and private applications are different problems

Most Bay Area families are running two applications at once. The UC system reads its own four personal insight questions, does not consider demonstrated interest, and evaluates within a California applicant pool. Private universities read a Common Application, weigh early-round strategy heavily, and consider context the UCs do not.

Treating those as one process is the most common mistake we see. We build the school list around the early round first, because that is where the odds are, and then work the UC application as its own exercise rather than a reformatting job.

What an engagement includes

Families work with us on a single end-to-end package rather than buying hours. One team, one plan, from the first strategy session through to the acceptance letter.

  • Strategy and school list built around early-round positioning.
  • Personal statement and supplements, developed with former admission officers.
  • The Hook Program, in which a student builds an original project with real users or real recognition.
  • Independent academic research with a Ph.D. or professor, published in an academic journal.
  • Summer programs and internships drawn from our own database and partner companies.
  • Admissions Roundtable review before the application is submitted.

Pricing sits in two tiers, Standard and Premium, each quoted after a private consultation. See how the tiers differ, or read how we work.

Where else we work

Alongside San Francisco, we work with families in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Bangkok.
